I'd assumed that it might have been Shakespeare who coined the familiar phrase about "Nature, red in tooth and claw".  But it turned out that I was wrong.  The author of that line was the Victorian poet Tennyson and it features in his In memoriam A.H.H.

What brought the phrase to mind is this set of photographs of handsome HMBoy Igor taking a day out to catch a bit of sun in the woods and enjoy a quick dip in the lake.

Fortunately, on the day he went on his rural expedition, Igor didn't encounter any teeth or claws - no bears, no wild boars, not even a solitary mosquito caused him any grief that afternoon.

Of course, it goes without saying that our HMBoys photographer would certainly, given half a chance, have happily sunk his teeth into one of the boy's more than tempting juicy bits.  It seems, though, that coy (or maybe simply choosy?) Igor never offered him the opportunity.

I assumed that our snapper - who has an impressive success rate, it must be said, in that regard - would have been somewhat annoyed, to say the least, by igor's refusal to play ball.  But, for once, our guy was pretty relaxed and philosophical about his rejection.  He might even have quoted two of the more famous lines from that same poem:

Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all.
